La Vacca

There isn’t much mystery behind the meaning of this name. In Italian, “La Vacca” literally translates to “The Cow”. Italian surnames usually originated from parental last names, occupations, descriptions of personal qualities (i.e. nicknames), or geographical origins (Powell, n.d.). It may either come from a nickname for someone who was considered to be a gentle person or it could have occupational origins, referring to someone who was a cowherder ("Vacca," n.d.).

La Vacca or Lavacca is found throughout Italy, but is found in the largest frequency in Foggia and Bari (Castagna et al., n.d.).
